Caboose #31 at Cowan

Cowan proudly displays a caboose decked out in NC&StL colors and lettering.

Unfortunately, NC&StL #31 was the number for a class NE-3 caboose, and this car is either an NE-6, NE-7 or NE-8 class car. The NE-6 and NE-8 classes were converted at the West Nashville Shops in 1941 and 1943 respectively from automobile boxcars built in 1911. The NE-7 class cars were built new from "reclaim material" at West Nashville in 1941-1943.

It is possible that Cowan chose this number from the L&N #331, which was renumbered from an NC&StL NE-6 caboose.

Thanks to Steve Johnson for updated information.
