WILLIAM E. ARNOLD, JR. (1915 - 2000) Chief Clerk-Freight Traffic Representative began his railroad service at Lexington, Tenn. on May 2, 1930. Upon entering the Army in Dec. of 1942, he had 12 yrs. experience in the transportation field & had graduated in Traffic Management from LaSalle Extension School, Chicago, Ill. with the N C & St. L Railroad. Duties included general railroad clerical work, rating & routing, checking schedules, writing Bills of Lading & Waybills, loading & unloading of boxcars, checking all forms of freight, checking of railroad yards, proper preparations of over, short & damaged reports and various other duties in connection with railroad transportation. In Dec. of 1942 He was granted a leave of absence from N C & St. L for the duration of military service. After discharge from the Army in September 1945, he returned to his N C & St. L employment in Lexington. He came to work with the Jackson (TENN) General Agency on Jan. 14, 1947 as Steno-Clerk Chief Clerk - F.T.R. During World War II he served 3 yrs. in the Field Artillery two of which were in Europe. There he participated in the Normandy Invasion, Northern France & Rhineland Campaigns, Ardennes & Central Europe & was one of those trapped in the Battle of the Bulge. He remained with the N C & St. L and its merger with L & N until his retirement. Besides his railroad service career, William was a photographer, first by hobby & then by profession owning Arnold Studio in Lexington, TN until his death at the age of 85 in 2000.
